Every Mother’s Day at Renewal House is extra special, as our moms and their children work through recovery together.
Mother’s Day is extra special for Kiley and her son this year. They are completing their stay in the Renewal House Family Residential Program and moving to their own apartment. A year ago, Kiley arrived at Renewal House with her child, fleeing an abusive, isolating relationship that fueled her substance use. At the time she was admitted to Renewal House, Kiley described the life changes she wanted for her family: “My vision is a stable home for [my son] and myself where we both feel safe and comfortable to be ourselves, a good job so I can provide and help with my feelings that lead me to numb myself with drugs.” They achieved all of that and more. Kiley has maintained her sobriety and gained full-time employment. Her son, whose skills had fallen behind his peers, is finishing the school year at grade level. In the past, Kiley had seen the hurt in her child’s eyes that reminded her of her own. Now, the proud mother sees the impact of her recovery and her strengths reflected in her son. The little boy who once did not want to let his mother out of his sight has become much more confident and secure.
